Bitcoin slipped about 1.1% to around $81,460 on Tuesday as Asian stocks fell and oil climbed, and QCP Capital warned that wider equity deleveraging could threaten the $80,000 support level. Monday's $527 million spot bitcoin ETF inflow, almost all into BlackRock's IBIT, is the main counterweight for bulls.
Bitcoin is leaning on a key level. The largest cryptocurrency dropped about 1.1% over 24 hours to roughly $81,460 on Tuesday, according to CoinDesk’s Crypto Daybook Americas. Ether fell 1.7% to around $2,384 and the broader CoinDesk 20 index lost roughly 1.6%, dragged lower by declines in Asian stocks and a rising oil price.
QCP Capital flags the $80,000 line
Analysts at QCP Capital wrote in a Monday note that further weakness in equities could damp demand for crypto. “Broader equity deleveraging dynamics could transmit to cryptocurrency markets and potentially threaten the $80,000 support level if sustained,” they wrote.
That risk looked live on Tuesday morning. Both Nasdaq 100 and S&P 500 futures were lower, and crypto-linked stocks including Coinbase and Galaxy Digital were falling in pre-market trading.
ETF demand is strong but narrow
The counterweight is fund flows. As we reported earlier, US spot bitcoin ETFs took in roughly $527 million on Monday, their biggest net inflow in a month. BlackRock’s IBIT alone attracted about $665 million, its largest inflow in over a year, while funds from Fidelity and Grayscale saw withdrawals.
Ether ETFs lost $103.3 million, a fourth consecutive day of outflows. CoinDesk read this as bitcoin-specific demand rather than appetite for the wider crypto sector.
The macro backdrop
QCP added that a continued Treasury rally could support risk assets, particularly alongside falling real yields and a weaker dollar. For now the picture is less friendly: the US 10-year Treasury yield sits around 5.13% and Brent crude trades near $110 a barrel, keeping energy-driven inflation risk in play.
The Federal Reserve is widely expected to hold rates next week, although prediction markets are pricing a 25 basis point increase for the following month. On the charts, CoinDesk noted that bitcoin’s weekly trend remains intact above its 50-week exponential moving average, with no divergence in the relative strength index, pointing to consolidation as more likely than a major breakdown.
What it means for traders
- Watch $80,000: it is the level analysts are citing. A clean break would likely trigger stop-losses and liquidations on leveraged longs, so size positions and set stops before volatility arrives, not after.
- Equities are leading: Nasdaq futures, oil and the 10-year yield are worth watching alongside the bitcoin chart this week.
- Leverage costs vary: if you trade perpetual futures, fees and maximum leverage differ widely between exchanges. Compare them in our exchange comparison and see how we test.
