Andreessen Horowitz is renaming a16z Crypto to a16z Frontier and widening its mandate to AI, autonomous machines and biology. Chris Dixon says the firm will keep investing in crypto and advocating for regulation, following similar moves by Paradigm, Framework and Haun Ventures.
Crypto’s most influential venture investor no longer has crypto in its fund’s name. Andreessen Horowitz is renaming a16z Crypto to a16z Frontier and expanding its mandate to artificial intelligence and other long horizon technologies, general partner Chris Dixon said on Thursday.
“An expansion,” not an exit
Dixon insisted the firm is not leaving digital assets. “This is an expansion: we will continue to invest in crypto and related ventures and advocate for sensible crypto regulation,” he wrote. The firm was an early backer of Coinbase and has invested in Solana and Uniswap, and it is one of the main funders of the industry’s policy push in Washington.
His argument is that blockchains have faded into the background of products people already use. “Wall Street and fintech companies now regularly launch products built on blockchains. Does that make them crypto companies? The label matters less now,” he wrote, adding that companies should be defined “by what they do rather than by the technologies they use.”
New focus areas
a16z Frontier will look at AI products, “autonomous machines that can perceive, reason, and act in the physical world,” biology and medicine, and networks connecting people and AI agents. Dixon sees crypto as the payment layer for those agents: “Crypto can give new networks native economic capabilities, enable machine-to-machine transactions.” He will lead the fund with Marc Andreessen, Ben Horowitz, Eddy Lazzarin and Guy Wuollet. No fund size was given; the latest figure on record is $2.2 billion announced in May.
Part of a wider trend
CoinDesk notes that other crypto native firms have made similar moves. Paradigm raised $1.2 billion in July for AI, robotics and other technologies, Framework Ventures raised $400 million in June to expand into AI, energy, fintech and tokenization, and Haun Ventures broadened its focus with a $1 billion raise in May.
What it means for traders
- Capital competition: venture money flowing toward AI can mean fewer new token launches funded by top VCs.
- Agent payments narrative: tokens tied to AI agents and machine payments may get more attention.
