Bitcoin traders are heading into Wednesday’s Federal Reserve decision with two very different playbooks. As BeInCrypto reports, BTC rose 1.54% in 24 hours to $80,837, with Ethereum up 1.79% to $2,350.85, XRP up 2.44% to $1.33 and Solana up 1.69%, following a 1.18% gain in the Nasdaq Composite led by chipmakers.
Spot holders withdraw, futures traders hedge
On-chain data from Santiment shows a net 14,942 BTC left exchanges, the largest single-day outflow in five weeks. Coins held off exchanges cannot be sold instantly, and Santiment read the move as less defensive than the macro risk implies. Outflows can also reflect exchanges shuffling coins between their own wallets, so the signal is not conclusive.
Derivatives traders on Binance are more cautious. Short volume stands at about $4.11 billion versus $3.91 billion in longs, a long/short ratio near 0.95 according to analyst Arab Chain, with open interest around $9.15 billion. That is a limited bearish tilt rather than a heavy bet against the market.
A packed macro calendar
Markets expect the Fed to hold rates at 2 p.m. ET, although Morgan Stanley expects more hike signals. Alphabet and Microsoft report earnings after the close, and PCE inflation and GDP data follow on Thursday, so volatility could arrive in several waves.
What it means for traders
- Key levels: Santiment names $80,000 as the first level to defend. Holding it could favour a rebound toward $82,500 to $84,000, while a decisive drop below about $79,000 would weaken that setup.
- Short squeeze risk: a dovish Fed could force short sellers to buy back, while a hawkish Fed or weak Big Tech earnings could drag tech and crypto lower together.
- Read open interest with price: CryptoQuant notes rising OI during a drop can signal fresh shorts, while rising OI with price points to new money.
- Size down around events: if you trade the Fed with leverage, use stops and a venue with deep liquidity. Compare futures fees in our exchange comparison; our top picks are BingX and OKX. New to crypto? Start with where to buy your first bitcoin.
