Bitcoin options are pricing bigger short-term swings than BTC has recently delivered, with Laevitas data showing a 9.2-point gap between implied and realized volatility ahead of the Fed, ECB and BoJ decisions. If the meetings pass quietly, option buyers could lose part of that premium.

Bitcoin options traders are paying up for movement this week. According to CryptoSlate, derivatives analytics firm Laevitas showed in its October 26 snapshot that implied volatility on short-dated BTC options sits well above the volatility the market has actually realized, a setup that can hurt option buyers if the central bank decisions pass without a big move.
What the numbers show
Laevitas put Bitcoin’s seven-day at-the-money implied volatility at 36.5%, up from 32% a week earlier and close to the 30-day reading of 37%. In a separate comparison, it paired 36.1% implied volatility with 26.9% realized volatility, a gap of 9.2 volatility points. All readings are annualized.
Implied volatility is the movement priced into options, while realized volatility measures how much BTC has actually moved. A wide gap means buyers are paying for more action than recent price history suggests.
Downside protection, by contrast, did not look unusually expensive. Laevitas put the 30-day 25-delta skew at minus 4.64 volatility points, almost identical to its minus 4.62 median and at the 49th percentile over 52 weeks. The negative reading means puts carry a small premium over calls, which is normal.
Why this week is crowded
The Federal Reserve’s decision is scheduled for 2 p.m. Eastern today, followed by the press conference at 2:30 p.m. The calendar also includes European Central Bank and Bank of Japan decisions, economic data, earnings and Friday’s Deribit monthly options expiry. Laevitas said the short-dated pricing reflects that packed schedule, so the 9.2-point spread cannot be pinned on the Fed alone.
What it means for traders
Options lose value as implied volatility falls and as time passes. If the decisions come and go without enough BTC movement, and implied volatility drops back, buyers who paid for event exposure can lose part of the premium even if they guessed direction correctly. A surprise from any of the central banks could keep volatility elevated instead.
For spot and perpetual traders, elevated implied volatility is a reminder to size positions for wider swings around the announcements and to watch funding and liquidation levels.
