Billionaire venture capitalist Tim Draper says rising Bitcoin adoption could eventually trigger runs on banks as people lose confidence in fiat money. He repeated that it is "irresponsible to not own bitcoin" and has kept his $250,000 BTC target this year.

Billionaire venture capitalist Tim Draper has doubled down on one of his boldest Bitcoin calls: that growing adoption of BTC could eventually push people away from fiat money and set off runs on banks. The comments, made in a recent post on X, were reported by U.Today on October 28.
What Draper said
“I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. It’s irresponsible to not own bitcoin,” Draper said. He laid out a path in which businesses first add Bitcoin as a payment option alongside traditional currencies and later drop fiat altogether: “First they’ll be like ‘We accept bitcoin.’ And then they’ll be like, ‘We only accept bitcoin.'”
In his view, that shift would erode confidence in currencies such as the US dollar. “And then people will not value dollars, fiat. And so there’s going to be a run on the banks,” he said, adding that “eventually the world is going to never be the same.” Draper argued that people and companies who prepare for this “seismic shift” will be ahead of those that keep holding legacy currencies.
A long record of bold Bitcoin calls
The remarks fit a pattern. According to U.Today, Draper repeated his $250,000 Bitcoin price target in September, saying BTC could reach it in about two years, and pointed to the next halving, expected in 2028, which cuts the new supply paid to miners. In April he said Bitcoin could reach that level within 18 months because of US dollar inflation. At the Bitcoin 2026 conference in Las Vegas the same month, he recommended that companies hold 5% to 15% of their treasury reserves in BTC.
None of these are forecasts with a fixed mechanism or date that can be checked today. They are the views of one well-known long-term holder, and they should be read that way.
What it means for traders
Statements like Draper’s rarely move the market on their own. Bitcoin was trading around $81,260 on OKX at the time of writing, up roughly 0.7% from its level 24 hours earlier, after a session dominated by the Fed’s rate decision. For short-term traders, macro data, ETF flows and leverage in the futures market matter far more than a celebrity price call. Long-term holders who share Draper’s thesis still need a plan for drawdowns, since BTC has repeatedly fallen 20% or more on the way to new highs.
