The Chicago Fed National Activity Index (CFNAI) moved back into positive territory in September, rising to +0.07 from -0.08 in August, according to a market wire from Walter Bloomberg citing the Chicago Fed release. The reading signals US growth running slightly above its historical trend.

What drove the September reading

Production-related indicators strengthened, while employment was flat and the consumer spending and housing categories weakened. In short, the economy looks resilient overall, but the mix is uneven.

How to read the CFNAI

The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago explains that a zero value has been associated with the US economy expanding at its historical average rate, negative values with below-average growth and positive values with above-average growth. The bank also tracks a three-month moving average (CFNAI-MA3): following an expansion, values below -0.70 have historically signalled a rising likelihood of recession, while readings above +0.70 more than two years into an expansion have been linked to a rising chance of sustained inflation. A single month near zero sits far from either threshold.

Why it matters this week

The data lands just before a heavy macro calendar. The Federal Reserve’s two-day meeting runs October 27-28, with the decision on Wednesday, and the Q3 GDP advance estimate and September PCE inflation follow on October 29. We covered the full schedule in our crypto week ahead preview. A modestly positive activity reading supports the view that the Fed has little urgency to change course.
