Coinbase Brazil license: exchange applies to central bank before October 30 deadline

TL;DR

Coinbase has applied to the Central Bank of Brazil for authorisation as a virtual asset service provider, one day before the country's licence deadline. The exchange says it does not expect to suspend any services while regulators review the filing.

Exchanges TradeReviewed News Desk

Coinbase has filed for a crypto licence in Brazil, joining the rush of exchanges trying to beat the country’s October 30 deadline. The US exchange submitted its application to the Central Bank of Brazil on Wednesday under the new virtual asset service provider (VASP) framework, according to a statement shared with Cointelegraph.

No service pause expected

“We do not expect the application review to require a suspension of our existing services,” a Coinbase spokesperson said. Brazil’s rules let existing providers that apply by the end of October keep operating under transitional arrangements while the central bank reviews their files. The new framework adds requirements on governance, safeguarding of customer assets and compliance.

Coinbase also repeated its plan to bring its “Everything Exchange” strategy to Brazil, which could later add foreign exchange and payments to crypto trading. Those activities need separate authorisations.

Binance applied first, with restrictions

Binance applied on October 23. To fit the new rules it has restricted crypto lending, margin trading and other services in Brazil, and delisted 22 crypto assets. Coinbase has not announced similar cuts, which suggests the two exchanges are reading the transitional regime differently or offer a different product mix locally.

What it means for traders

Brazilian users of Coinbase should see no immediate change, but the final licence could still bring product limits, as Binance’s case shows. Platforms that miss Friday’s deadline risk having to stop serving Brazilian customers.
