Coinbase lists Ripple USD (RLUSD) on XRP Ledger, Ethereum and Base, challenging Kraken

28 Oct 2026

TL;DR

Coinbase has added Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin for retail and institutional clients across Coinbase Prime, Coinbase Exchange and the consumer app, with 1:1 dollar conversion on XRP Ledger, Ethereum and Base. The listing puts pressure on Kraken, which had led regulated RLUSD dollar pairs in the US.

Exchanges TradeReviewed News Desk

Coinbase is now offering Ripple USD (RLUSD), Ripple’s dollar stablecoin, to both retail and institutional clients. As reported by U.Today and Livecoins, RLUSD is available through Coinbase Prime, Coinbase Exchange and the Coinbase consumer app, with support across the XRP Ledger, Ethereum and Base.

What Coinbase is offering

Clients can convert between US dollars and RLUSD at a 1:1 ratio, and Livecoins reports that conversion also works with other compatible dollar stablecoins. Availability for Coinbase’s international exchange, including the option to use RLUSD as collateral, is set to follow later. U.Today adds that on Base, Ripple itself will support the asset’s liquidity, pointing to a direct commercial partnership between the two companies.

Jack McDonald, Ripple’s senior vice president of stablecoins, said “institutional appetite for compliant, high-quality stablecoins is clear,” but that access through platforms institutions already use had been missing. Brett Tejpaul of Coinbase Institutional described the integration as a step toward “the everything exchange.”

Pressure on Kraken

RLUSD has a market capitalization of about $2.4 billion, according to U.Today, and was built mainly for corporate use rather than to compete head on with USDT. Until now Kraken led regulated RLUSD dollar pairs in the US, with daily volume in its RLUSD/USD and RLUSD/USDC pairs of just over $225,000. Coinbase’s institutional client base could shift that liquidity quickly.

The listing also closes a chapter between the two companies: Coinbase delisted XRP in 2020 after the SEC sued Ripple and restored trading years later. It lands alongside the OCC’s final approval for Ripple National Trust Bank and a Robinhood integration expected by year end.

What it means for traders

More venues usually mean tighter spreads and a more reliable dollar peg for RLUSD, and the multi-chain support makes it easier to move funds between XRP Ledger and EVM networks. For XRP traders, the deal is another sign of Ripple’s push into regulated US finance, though a stablecoin listing does not by itself move XRP’s price.
