The crypto market sold off sharply late Thursday after an unexplained outflow of more than $2 billion from Binance hot wallets. Coinglass data cited by BeInCrypto shows $627.7 million in liquidations in a single hour, $606.6 million of it from long positions. Watcher.Guru reported Bitcoin under $78,500, Ether under $2,250, XRP under $1.25 and Solana under $96.
How fast it hit
Bitcoin traded near $80,800 on Binance at 20:00 UTC and spiked down to about $78,300 by 20:35 UTC, a drop of around 3%, before bouncing above $79,100. Ether fell from roughly $2,335 to a low near $2,233, more than 4%, then recovered to about $2,263. The first transfer out of the Binance 14 wallet landed at 20:24 UTC, and the sharpest candles printed in the following 15 minutes. Details of the outflow are in our Binance hack fears report.
Who got liquidated
Coinglass logged $189.1 million in Bitcoin and $156.8 million in Ether positions wiped out in the hour, with Solana third at $46.8 million. Shorts lost only $21.1 million. The largest single forced closure was an $11.09 million Bitcoin long on Binance at $79,254. By venue, Binance carried $344.8 million of the hour’s liquidations, followed by Hyperliquid at $97 million and Bybit at $77.3 million. Over 24 hours, 161,647 traders were liquidated for $951.2 million.
Why the market sold first
Bitcoin was already fragile after failing to hold $83,000 last week, and $80,000 was the level traders were watching. Funds stolen from an exchange tend to be sold, so any fresh movement from the receiving addresses can weigh on prices until Binance explains the transfer. Binance had not confirmed a hack at the time of writing, while Tether said it froze $971 million in USDT linked to the incident.
What it means for traders
- High leverage into an unconfirmed headline is how most of this hour’s losses happened. Smaller size and wider stops survive news spikes better.
- Expect volatility to stay high until Binance issues a statement either way.
- Futures fees, liquidation engines and insurance funds differ between venues. Compare them in our exchange comparison, or read the BingX review (number 1) and OKX review (number 2).
