The Federal Reserve kept the federal funds rate at 3.75% to 4.00% on October 28, 2026, in a 10-2 vote. Lisa Cook and Beth Hammack dissented in favor of a 25 basis point hike, and the statement says inflation remains elevated while the economy expands at a strong pace. Bitcoin and Ether barely moved in the first minutes.

The Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged on Wednesday. According to the official FOMC statement released at 2:00 p.m. EDT (19:00 CET), the Federal Open Market Committee kept the target range for the federal funds rate at 3.75% to 4.00%. The decision passed by a 10-2 vote.
Two dissents, both for a hike
The split is the headline for markets. Governor Lisa D. Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth M. Hammack voted against the decision because they preferred to raise the target range by a quarter percentage point at this meeting. Two officials pushing for tighter policy, rather than for a cut, makes this a hawkish hold.
What the Fed statement says
The committee describes the economy in strong terms. Economic activity “is expanding at a strong pace”, domestic spending has been resilient, productivity growth is strong and capital investment is robust. Job gains have kept pace with the workforce and the unemployment rate has changed little. The Fed also notes that uncertainty remains elevated, in part because of geopolitical developments.
On prices, the message is short: “Inflation remains elevated.” The committee says more information will help it decide the policy stance needed for a timely return of inflation to its 2% goal, and adds that it “will deliver price stability”. It is also continuing to maintain ample reserves in the banking system.
Bitcoin and Ether reaction
Crypto took the decision calmly in the first minutes. On OKX, Bitcoin traded at about $80,880 shortly after the release, almost unchanged from $80,864 just before 19:00 CET, after a quick swing between roughly $80,690 and $81,100. Ether was at about $2,347, versus $2,345 before the statement, in a range of about $2,340 to $2,356. Over 24 hours BTC is up about 0.5% and ETH about 0.1%.
A hold was widely expected, so the bigger risk for prices is the tone. A statement that stresses elevated inflation and strong growth, plus two votes for a hike, argues against near-term rate cuts. That is usually a headwind for risk assets such as BTC and ETH, and the post-meeting press conference can still move the market.
