Bitcoin TradeReviewed News Desk
A new kind of bitcoin fund is about to hit Nasdaq, one that is mostly stocks. Franklin Templeton filed a Form 8-A with the SEC on 22 October to register two exchange traded funds that convert stock dividends into bitcoin, the last regulatory step before launch. A prospectus filed the same day lists an effective date of 27 October.
The two funds
The Franklin US Equity Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF, ticker FBEQ, tracks the VettaFi US Large-Cap 500 Bitcoin DRIP Index, which held 499 large US companies as of 30 September. The Franklin US Innovation Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF, ticker FIBT, follows a Nasdaq 100 style innovation index.
At inception, each index holds 95% in stocks and 5% in bitcoin. Every dividend paid by the companies is reinvested in bitcoin at the market open on the day after the ex-date, so the bitcoin share grows over time. A traditional dividend reinvestment plan buys more of the paying company. These funds buy bitcoin instead.
The limits
At each quarterly rebalance, a bitcoin allocation above 5% is trimmed to 4.5%. If bitcoin exceeds 20% between rebalances, it is cut back to 4.5% within two business days. The funds do not hold bitcoin directly. They get exposure through exchange traded products, including Franklin’s spot fund EZBC, as well as futures and options. Crypto Briefing reported expense ratios as low as 0.09%.
Why it matters
The products aim at investors who want a small, rules based bitcoin sleeve inside a familiar stock fund without opening an exchange account or handling custody. It arrives as spot bitcoin ETFs saw $635 million of outflows on 23 October.
What it means for traders
- A gentle on-ramp: useful for retirement accounts, but bitcoin exposure stays small.
- Direct ownership is cheaper at scale: buying spot bitcoin on a low fee exchange avoids layered fees. See our crypto exchange fee index.
