Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi says only Tehran's proposal is on the table for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and that mediators' nuclear proposals are under study, while ruling out a meeting with US officials in Doha for now. US officials have not confirmed the account.

Iran Hormuz talks moved to Doha on Saturday, but Tehran says it is not sitting down with Washington directly. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said only Iran’s own proposal is on the table for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and that nuclear proposals from mediators are being studied as part of a second phase, according to headlines carried by First Squawk at 14:08 CET. The comments have not been confirmed by US officials.
What Araghchi said
- An Iranian delegation is in Doha for negotiations with Qatar, with no plans for Iran-US talks there, Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported (First Squawk, 13:56 CET).
- A letter from US Vice President JD Vance was discussed at a high level, and Araghchi called the US step to restart negotiations a “positive step” (14:00 CET).
- There are currently no plans to meet US officials, and the delegation will continue talks in Doha (14:03 CET).
- Qatari and Pakistani mediators are discussing Iran’s conditions and have submitted proposals on the nuclear issue (14:06 CET).
Why markets care
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes, and supply fears tied to the Middle East have kept crude prices elevated this autumn, which in turn keeps real yields high and weighs on assets like gold, as BeInCrypto Brasil noted this week. Any credible path to reopening the strait could ease that pressure, while a breakdown would do the opposite. Earlier on Saturday, Iranian state media also carried tough military rhetoric from Supreme Leader Khamenei, so the signals remain mixed.
Crypto is the only major market open on the weekend, so it tends to react first. Bitcoin traded near $77,460 on OKX around 14:10 CET, up about 0.2% over 24 hours, with no sharp move on the headlines so far.
What it means for traders
- Headline risk is high. Statements are coming through state media and wire headlines, and positions can flip quickly. Treat single headlines as unconfirmed until both sides comment.
- Watch Monday’s open. Oil, gold and equity futures will price the weekend news when they reopen, which can spill back into crypto.
- Size down on weekends. Thin liquidity can exaggerate moves on geopolitical news.
