Metaplanet gets Vanguard backing as VSS ETF buys 4.5 million shares worth $7.5 million

TL;DR

Vanguard's small-cap ETF VSS has disclosed its first position in Metaplanet, the Japan-listed Bitcoin treasury company, buying about 4.5 million shares worth roughly $7.5 million. The holding gives the fund indirect Bitcoin exposure through equity.

Metaplanet, the Tokyo-listed company that holds Bitcoin as its core treasury asset, now counts a Vanguard fund among its shareholders. Vanguard’s small-cap exchange-traded fund VSS disclosed a purchase of about 4.5 million Metaplanet shares, valued at roughly $7.5 million, according to data from Bitcoin Treasuries reported by Bloomingbit and TokenPost on October 26. Watcher.Guru also flagged the purchase, describing Vanguard as a $13.3 trillion asset manager.

What Vanguard bought

The position sits inside VSS, Vanguard’s international small-cap ETF, and it is the first time that fund has held Metaplanet stock. Metaplanet trades in Tokyo under the ticker 3350 and has built its corporate strategy around steadily adding Bitcoin to its balance sheet, in a model similar to Strategy in the US.

For context, a $7.5 million stake is small relative to Vanguard’s overall assets. Index and quantitative small-cap funds typically add names as they qualify for the benchmarks they track, so the purchase should not be read as a discretionary bet on Bitcoin by Vanguard. The sources do not say what triggered the inclusion.

Why it still matters

Vanguard has historically been the most reluctant of the big US asset managers when it comes to crypto. Seeing one of its funds hold a company whose main asset is Bitcoin shows how treasury companies are becoming part of mainstream equity portfolios, often without investors actively choosing crypto exposure. Every index or ETF that adds a Bitcoin treasury stock creates a small, passive channel of demand for that company’s shares, which in turn can support its ability to raise capital and buy more BTC.

The flip side is that treasury stocks tend to move with Bitcoin, often with more volatility, so passive holders also inherit that risk.

What it means for traders

Treasury-company headlines like this one rarely move BTC on their own, but they feed the broader narrative of institutional adoption that traders watch alongside ETF flows and macro data. This week that macro picture is dominated by the Federal Reserve meeting on October 27-28, so expect rate expectations to matter more for Bitcoin’s direction than a single fund disclosure.
