A security incident at a popular cloud platform is turning into a crypto problem. Railway, an app hosting service used by many developers, including crypto teams running bots and backends, disclosed on 21 October anomalous activity on systems that store customers’ environment variables.
What Railway disclosed
According to reports, Railway said some encrypted values may have been read and some decrypted. It paused deployments and told every user to rotate API keys, stored environment variables, registry credentials and other secrets, and to review logs. The deployment pause created a painful gap: customers could not redeploy their apps with replacement credentials until builds resumed. Railway restored Enterprise builds late Wednesday while other plans were still waiting, The Defiant reported.
Crypto losses
Environment variables are where many developers keep private keys for bots, relayers and hot wallets. A crypto investigator known as Tay tied about $371,000 in thefts on at least 19 EVM chains to keys kept on Railway. Some observers also speculated about a link to the reported admin key compromise at liquid staking protocol Swell, but the researcher who raised it called the connection speculative and Swell has not said where its keys were stored.
A familiar lesson
Most crypto losses do not come from breaking blockchains. They come from leaked keys and excessive permissions. Storing a hot wallet private key as a plain environment variable on a third party platform means the platform’s security becomes your wallet’s security.
What it means for traders
- Bot operators, act now: if your trading bot runs on Railway, rotate exchange API keys immediately and move hot wallet funds to new keys.
- Restrict API keys: disable withdrawals on exchange API keys used by bots and whitelist IP addresses where possible.
- Choose secure exchanges: platforms with granular API permissions reduce damage from leaks. See our testing methodology and our exchange comparison.
