Robinhood's head of futures and prediction markets said price contracts on Bitcoin, crude oil and gold are now the fastest growing products, and crypto contracts have shrunk to 15-minute settlement. The Fed rate decision was the platform's largest event contract in September.
Prediction markets started with elections and grew on sports. At Robinhood, the next wave is price bets on financial assets. JB Mackenzie, the company’s vice president and general manager for futures and prediction markets, said contracts tied to Bitcoin, crude oil and gold are now the fastest growing products on the platform.
From a week to 15 minutes
Speaking at the NEXTPredict conference in New York on Thursday, Mackenzie said sports is still Robinhood’s largest prediction market product, but usage is shifting. “We’ve now started to see price volatility contracts, such as bitcoin, crude oil, gold, start to dominate the marketplace,” he said.
Contracts are also getting shorter, especially in crypto. “It started off with a week. It’s moved to a day, and now we’re down to 15,” he said, referring to minutes. Asked about risk, he compared 15-minute crypto contracts to zero-day options, which expire on the same trading day and can produce rapid losses.
Robinhood’s largest event contract in September was not a sports game but the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision. The company entered the business through a partnership with Kalshi, a federally regulated prediction market exchange.
A gateway product
Mackenzie said users who arrive for event contracts often move quickly into stocks, crypto, futures and options, and some open retirement accounts. Robinhood has 11 businesses generating more than $100 million in annual revenue each, and he suggested prediction markets could be the fastest growing of them. The push comes as sports contracts face legal challenges from state gambling regulators.
What it means for traders
- Short contracts are high risk: a 15-minute Bitcoin contract is closer to a coin flip than an investment. Size positions as money you can lose entirely.
- Compare with regular derivatives: futures and options on crypto exchanges let you manage positions and exits, while binary contracts settle all or nothing.
- Know the fees: spreads on event contracts can be wide. Our crypto exchange fee index shows typical trading costs on major exchanges, and our exchange comparison covers which venues offer which products. Not financial advice.
