Elon Musk said SpaceX and Tesla boards formed special committees to weigh a merger, while cautioning it is not a certainty. Combined, the companies hold 30,221 BTC, worth about $2.5 billion, which would make the merged firm one of the largest non-mining corporate bitcoin holders.
A possible Elon Musk mega-merger would have a side effect for bitcoin: one of the largest corporate stashes outside the mining industry. Speaking on SpaceX’s third quarter earnings call on Tuesday, Musk said the boards of SpaceX and Tesla had formed special committees of independent directors to weigh a tie-up, cautioning that calling a deal “a certainty” would be “overstating it.”
The bitcoin math
Tesla reported 11,509 BTC in its latest quarterly filing, and SpaceX disclosed 18,712 BTC in the S-1 it filed ahead of its June IPO. Together that is 30,221 BTC, worth roughly $2.5 billion at a price near $83,000, according to Decrypt. A merged company would rank among the top handful of public holders, behind Strategy and a few others. The combined cost basis is around $1 billion, implying an average price near $35,000 per coin.
SpaceX’s holding is the striking part. It was effectively invisible to public markets until the IPO filing, more than double what blockchain trackers had attributed to SpaceX wallets.
What would change
A merger would not change bitcoin itself, and neither company has signaled plans to buy or sell. Both have held their positions steady. What would change is governance and accounting: the coins would sit in one public vehicle subject to quarterly disclosures and fair value accounting, which recently forced Tesla to book a loss as bitcoin slid.
Why it matters
Corporate holders matter for sentiment. A single, highly visible Musk company with 30,000 BTC on its books would draw attention every quarter, and any decision to sell or buy would move headlines. For now, the treasury is hypothetical and depends on a deal that remains exploratory.
What it means for traders
- No supply change: the coins are already held. A merger alone does not add demand.
- Watch disclosures: quarterly filings reveal any sales.
- SpaceX exposure on exchanges: some platforms list pre-IPO and stock perps. Compare them in our exchange comparison; BingX ranks first in our tests.
