Crypto Referral Programs Explained: How Exchange Referral Links Work

How crypto exchange referral programs work: referral links and codes, commissions, rebates for invited users, tracking and common rules.

Last updated:

Short answer: a crypto referral program gives every verified user a personal link or code. When someone signs up with it and trades, the exchange shares part of their trading fees with the referrer and sometimes gives the new user a fee discount or a sign-up reward. Referral programs are open to everyone; affiliate programs are the higher-paying version for creators and communities.

Referral program vs affiliate program

Referral program Affiliate program
Who can join Any verified user Approved creators, communities, websites
Typical reward Lower fee share or fixed bonuses Higher revenue share, tiers, custom deals
Application None Usually required
Extras Rewards for both sides Dashboards, sub-affiliates, account manager

How tracking works

Your link carries an ID that the exchange stores when the new user registers. Most exchanges only count a referral if the account is created through your link or with your code at sign-up, and if the user completes identity verification. Changing the referrer later is usually not possible.

Kickbacks and rebates

Some programs let you give part of your commission back to the people you invite as a fee rebate. This can make your link more attractive, but it lowers your own share.

Frequently asked questions

What is a crypto referral code?

A personal code or link from an exchange that connects a new user’s account to the person who invited them, so the inviter can earn a share of the new user’s trading fees.

Does using a referral link cost me more?

No. The commission comes out of the fees the exchange already charges. Some links even give the new user a fee discount.

Can I add a referral code after signing up?

Usually not. Most exchanges only accept a referral code during registration.

Is a referral program the same as an affiliate program?

Not quite. Referral programs are open to all users with standard rewards; affiliate programs are for approved partners and usually pay more.
