Is My Money Safe on Binance After the $6.3B Hack? What We Know

Is your money safe on Binance after the $6.3B hack? What Binance promised (SAFU, proof of reserves on 2 Nov), when withdrawals reopen, and 7 steps to protect your funds now.

Short answer: Binance says user funds are safe and that it will cover the full loss of about $6.3 billion from its SAFU emergency fund and company money. About $3 billion has been frozen on-chain. Crypto withdrawals on Binance.com are paused while the withdrawal system is rebuilt; Binance has given a target of roughly 48 hours and plans a public proof of reserves on Monday 2 November 2026. Your balance is a claim on Binance, so until withdrawals reopen and the reserves are verified, the honest answer is: probably yes, but not proven yet.

What happened in the Binance hack

On the evening of 29 October 2026 large amounts of ETH, BTC, USDT and other tokens left Binance hot wallets for new addresses. In its official update Binance said its initial investigation points to a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop, which let an attacker reach a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions. Binance said it found no evidence that wallet private keys were leaked. Co-CEO Richard Teng later told reporters the attack was complex, was not carried out by one person, and used a self-destruct mechanism to hide its tracks.

Is my money safe on Binance right now?

Here is what Binance has committed to, and what is still open.

Question What Binance says Status (30 Oct 2026)
Will users lose money? No. Losses covered by SAFU fund and company funds; Teng said more than $6.34 billion of corporate funds were set aside Promise, not yet verifiable
Can I withdraw? Withdrawals rebuilt and tested before reopening; target about 48 hours Paused
Can I deposit and trade? Global platform says deposits and trading work Open
Are reserves 1:1? Updated proof of reserves after remediation, public check planned for Monday 2 November Pending

Two points matter for you. First, an exchange balance is an IOU: you own a claim, not coins on the blockchain. Second, Binance has said most user funds sit in cold wallets and only move to hot wallets when someone withdraws, which is why the loss hit company operations and not individual accounts. Until withdrawals reopen and the proof of reserves is published, nobody outside Binance can confirm the numbers.

What you should do now

  1. Check your balance only in the official app or by typing binance.com yourself. Do not log in through links in emails, texts or DMs.
  2. Turn on a passkey or app-based 2FA and an address whitelist. Revoke API keys you do not use.
  3. Think twice before depositing more. Deposits work but crypto withdrawals do not, so new coins cannot leave until the pause ends.
  4. Save a record of your balances. A screenshot or exported statement with the date helps if you ever need to raise a claim, and for taxes.
  5. Ignore anyone offering early withdrawals, refunds or “recovery”. These are scams. See our guide to Binance hack scams.
  6. When withdrawals reopen, move long-term coins to your own wallet. Coins on a hardware wallet are not exposed to exchange hacks. Follow our step by step guide to moving crypto to a Ledger and send a small test first. Expect queues and slower processing in the first hours.
  7. Keep trading money on more than one exchange. One venue pausing withdrawals should not freeze all of your capital.

Self-custody for coins you are not trading. We recommend Ledger hardware wallets: keys stay on a certified Secure Element chip, offline. Buy only from the official store, never from a marketplace or reseller.

Should I move to another exchange?

That depends on why you use an exchange. If you trade actively, you still need one, and no exchange is immune to attacks. What you can control is concentration risk: split trading funds between two or three platforms with published proof of reserves, strong 2FA options and withdrawal whitelists. In our exchange comparison BingX ranks #1 and OKX #2; see the BingX review, the OKX review and our Binance alternatives guide. Read how we test to see how scores are built.

FAQ

Is Binance going bankrupt after the hack?

There is no sign of that. Binance says it can cover the roughly $6.3 billion loss from its SAFU fund and company funds, and that it set aside more than $6.34 billion. The proof of reserves planned for 2 November 2026 will be the first independent data point.

When can I withdraw from Binance?

Binance gave a target of about 48 hours on 30 October 2026 while it rebuilds and tests the withdrawal service. Treat it as an estimate, not a guarantee, and expect a gradual reopening by asset and network.

Did the hackers access user accounts?

Binance says the attacker used a compromised internal system to submit unauthorized withdrawals from exchange wallets and found no evidence of a private key leak. It has not reported access to individual user accounts.

Is Binance.US affected?

Binance.US says it was not affected by the incident.

Is it safer to keep crypto on a hardware wallet?

For coins you hold long term, yes: a hardware wallet keeps the keys offline and out of exchange systems. You then carry the responsibility for your recovery phrase, so store it offline and never share it.
