Short answer: use the network that both the sender and the receiver support, and pick the cheapest one among those. TRC20 (Tron) and BEP20 (BNB Smart Chain) usually cost less to send than ERC20 (Ethereum). ERC20 is the most widely supported by wallets and DeFi apps. Never mix networks: the deposit address and network on the receiving side must match what you choose when you withdraw.
The three networks at a glance
| TRC20 | ERC20 | BEP20 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blockchain | Tron | Ethereum | BNB Smart Chain |
| Issuer | Tether (native) | Tether (native) | Pegged token (Binance-Peg BSC-USD); Tether lists no USD₮ contract on BNB Smart Chain |
| Fee paid in | TRX (energy and bandwidth) | ETH (gas) | BNB (gas) |
| Address format | Starts with T | Starts with 0x | Starts with 0x |
| Typical use | Exchange to exchange transfers, payments | DeFi, wallets, institutions | BNB Chain apps |
We do not quote fixed fees here because network fees move with demand. The exchange shows the exact withdrawal fee for each network on the withdrawal screen.
Why BEP20 needs extra care
Tether lists the blockchains where it issues USD₮ itself on its supported protocols page. On BNB Smart Chain that page lists only a XAU₮ (gold) contract, not USD₮. The USDT you see on BNB Smart Chain is a pegged token and the BscScan contract is labelled Binance-Peg BSC-USD. It works on exchanges that support it, but it is a different token contract from Tether’s own issuance.
ERC20 and BEP20 addresses look the same
Both start with 0x. That means you can paste an Ethereum address into a BEP20 withdrawal and the form accepts it. If the receiver does not credit BNB Smart Chain deposits to that address, your funds can get stuck. OKX explains that a regular address supports one coin on one network, so check what your destination expects.
How to choose, step by step
- Open the deposit page on the receiving exchange or wallet and see which USDT networks it lists.
- Open the withdrawal page on the sending exchange and compare the fee for each network both sides support.
- Copy the deposit address for that exact network.
- Select the same network on the withdrawal page, send a small test, then the rest.
Where to send USDT cheaply
Withdrawal fees per network differ by exchange. Our ranking puts BingX first and OKX second. Both are MiCA licensed in the EU: BingX via BingX EU (Austrian FMA, EEA users only) and OKX via OKX Europe (Malta). Note that in the EU, MiCA licensed platforms can restrict stablecoins that are not MiCA compliant, so USDT availability can differ for EU users. Open BingX or open OKX.

Frequently asked questions
Which is cheaper, TRC20 or ERC20?
TRC20 transfers usually cost less than ERC20 transfers, because Ethereum gas is often more expensive. Check the live fee on your exchange withdrawal page.
Can I send USDT TRC20 to an ERC20 address?
No. Tron addresses start with T and Ethereum addresses with 0x, so most forms will reject it. Always match networks.
What happens if I send ERC20 USDT on BEP20?
The addresses look the same, so the transfer can go through to a place that does not credit it. Contact the receiving platform; recovery is not guaranteed.
Is BEP20 USDT the same as Tether USDT?
It is a pegged token on BNB Smart Chain (Binance-Peg BSC-USD), not a USD₮ contract listed by Tether.
Which USDT network should a beginner use?
The one both sides support with the lowest fee shown on the withdrawal screen. Send a small test first.
