BlackRock files for PBIT, a buffered Bitcoin ETF with capped gains

TL;DR

BlackRock filed a preliminary prospectus for the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF (PBIT), which would use options on IBIT to limit losses in exchange for capped upside. It would be BlackRock's third Bitcoin ETF filing. The firm still has no spot Solana or XRP fund.

BlackRock wants to offer Bitcoin exposure with a safety net. The world’s largest asset manager filed a preliminary prospectus with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday for the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF, ticker PBIT. The fund would trade some upside for limited downside protection.

How PBIT would work

PBIT would not hold Bitcoin directly. Instead it would use options linked to the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), BlackRock’s spot Bitcoin ETF. The prospectus describes three overlapping sets of options contracts, with one typically replaced each month. Each tranche would initially target a maximum loss of about 10% on the underlying Bitcoin-linked asset, before fees and expenses, while capping potential gains.

BlackRock also warned that the fund “does not provide a fixed Tranche Protection Start Value, Floor or Tranche Cap Value,” which implies investors could still face larger losses than the target suggests.

Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart said PBIT would be BlackRock’s third Bitcoin ETF filing. Similar buffered Bitcoin funds already exist from Calamos, First Trust and Innovator.

BlackRock’s crypto lineup

IBIT launched in January 2024 and is the largest spot Bitcoin ETF by assets, with $65.7 billion in net assets as of Monday. The spot Ether fund ETHA followed in July 2024 and holds about $8 billion. In March 2026 BlackRock added the iShares Staked Ethereum Trust (ETHB), and in June the iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF (BITA), which generates income from options.

What is still missing is a spot fund for any other coin. ETF Store president Nate Geraci wrote on X that he was “still shocked” BlackRock is sitting out spot ETFs for SOL, XRP and HYPE, adding that the firm clearly has high conviction in only BTC and ETH “for now”.

What it means for traders

What to watch next

The filing is preliminary, so watch for SEC feedback, a final fee and a launch date. Also watch whether BlackRock eventually joins the market for spot ETFs on other large coins.
